baiiiiieeee

Omar has the most earnest byes.

Whenever we FaceTime with my mom or with Ikram, his favorite part is giving the screen a kiss, saying Bye! and hanging up the phone. Whenever he hears a tram pass in front of the house, he rushes to the balcony and calls out Bye! Whenever I let him watch Teletubbies or his ABC video, he never fails to say Bye! whenever a character says bye. He rarely says Hi, but recently, he sometimes saunters over to my brother, pats him on the shoulder and goes real friendly, "Haaiiii"

It's really the best thing ever-- his earnestness.

And you know my big speech about how I don't want to compete with other parents when their babies reach milestones? Well call me a big hypocrite, I am proud as punch whenever I think Omar is doing something relatively quick.

I still find comparing between babies for these little accomplishments to be pointless, but it is very exciting when you compare the same baby what he couldn't do before and what he can do now. I think of all the skills that babies learn, talking is the most exciting. There's the dexterity and physical actions that they get better at, but real words spoken from a mouth with only six teeth (and no new ones in sight) seems unbelievable at times. Like, did you just say what I think you said?!

Maybe because I find that personality and character shine through words, and it is a sure sign of ideas and thoughts. His memory is quite amazing too. Even before he could talk, when he was around 7 months old I remember having a very difficult time trying to change his diaper because he had just discovered crawling, and it was in a precarious space in a bathroom in a restaurant in Istanbul, and after failing to pin him down, I started "reading" aloud  Dear Zoo, a book that I read to him regularly. Amazingly, he calmed down and paid attention, responded to every single line the way he would if I had the book in front of him. So on some level, he knew exactly what I was saying. I wasn't imagining it!

Anyway, it's late. To quote Omar, Baiiieeeee!
